My goal is to set up distribution business in Australia that combines online retail distribution (B2C) and wholesale distribution to specialty stores (B2B). The questions to be answered are:
The decision must be based on the combination of warehousing and shipping costs, given different levels of sales volume. The warehouse space must be from 1000m2 to 2000m2. The shipping cost must be estimated based on a matrix with 3 shipping origins (Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne) and 5 shipping destinations (Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane). The average shipping order will be $300 with 45Kg per order. The sales distribution to each destination can follow the regular GDP distribution. I am available to support with further questions and doubts that may arise along the research.
I 've formulated successful bids for tender previously so I can assess and estimate the competitiveness of your business model. I perceive the following as issues for you (and your market research project you advertised previously) : Data to capture the spread of your intended Market (Source ABS Census Data 2016). Data about your competitors - Costs of cross-subsidised and centralised DC's and 3PL providers. Data about your Products i.e. the ones that you can source and supply competetively and profitably. these are only three that you will need to consider and I suggest you source the data yourself prior to giving it to someone for analysis (I will however, if you choose, assist as far as practical in its procurement). I am quoting to give you an initial model to estimate the logistics task, however, I would extend this quote if further modelling to establish a full business case were to be required.

Or are you seeking research on the best place to have the warehouse in order to distribute orders nationally as the goods are already in Australia?
Is it solely a shipping aspect you seek? Or road/truck costs?

Yes, the cargo is fitness equipment and will be imported from China. The warehouse being near a distribution hub would help indeed, but it is not mandatory. Warehouse cost is the primary driver for the decision.
Or are you seeking research on the best place to have the warehouse in order to distribute orders nationally as the goods are already in Australia? Yes, exactly. Once the products are already in my warehouse, I will ship orders all throughout Australia either to end consumers who purchase on my online shop or to other retail specialty stores that purchase bulk orders from us.
Is it solely a shipping aspect you seek? Or road/truck costs? What I seek is to decide where to set up my warehouse operation: Adelaide or Sydney or Melborune? And this decision will be made base on the operational costs of each location. And what I call operational cost is the combination of warehousing + domestic shipping costs in each of these 3 locations. The parameters to be used when quoting these costs are available on the project briefing, but I would be happy to explain them further in case they are not clear enough.
