I would like the attached hand written documents typed and assembled into a single microsoft word document. The document must be compatible with word 2010. The job includes you proof reading and spell checking it, so that it is accurate when I get it back. I would like it formatted with the dates in the margin, as per the early pages. I'm thinking Times New Roman size 12 font but if you have reasons for other suggestions, i'm happy to listen.

I am currently using the 2010 version of Word. I am an administration assistant by trade, and have had experience drafting and editing documents ensuring they are proofread, spell checked and formatted prior to them being sent out.

Using a table would be my preferred method to ensure all text remained in alignment and to make formatting simple and easy to change should you wish to in the future.

Proofreading and spell checking would be completed by myself, before being run through the spell checker to pick up any spelling errors that I may have missed.

Hello Mark,

I have extensive experience with Word and would keep the format very simple, either formatted in 2 columns or in a table. There are 55 pages to transcribe but thankfully you have clear writing, so that task would be straightforward.

Editing and proofreading are my special interest and I have just completed a 9 volume assignment which involved close attention to detail and consistency over all books.

After transcribing the writing I would check for typing errors, grammar and spelling with the first pass in hard copy, then run it through some software programmes to ensure it is accurate. This has proven to be a reliable method of achieving a great result.

I propose an hourly rate as it is the fairest way so you only pay for the time taken.

It would be a very interesting assignment as family histories are the everyday tales of who we are and where we come from.

Hello Mark,

I have lots of experience working on biographical and genealogical text, having assisted several friends and family members in their research efforts. Transcription and editing go hand in hand with these tasks, and I understand the business quite well. I am also an exceptional freelance editor, and while I would proof read for obvious spelling errors, I'd be reluctant to change the writing too much, as this document captures the writers character in a way that I believe would be better preserved, even if the text isn't necessarily grammatically perfect.

To ensure dates align with entries in the margin, I'd suggest a simple table structure, which would translate well into an on-line format if you ever decided to move the information into a web page. it is also the easiest method to avoid alignment problems.

With regards to the Times fonts, they are one option. You may also wish to consider a sans serif font, such as Verdana, Calibri, or the Classic Helvetica. Each font has it's benefits, with some looking better on screen, and others such as Palatino being the classic font for modern printed books. Of course, the advantage of having everything in a Word document, is that you can simply change the fonts on the fly. I would recommend however using a single font type if you wish to apply a blanket font change, as multiple fonts becomes harder to maintain.

Word 2010 is a less flexible document format these days. Files can be saved in this way, however some formatting can be lost when using newer versions of the word processor. Therefore simple document layouts are the best.

I estimate there is between 15 and 20 hours of work required for this particular task. This includes transcribing 55 pages, proof reading, and minor edits. Processing time would therefore be about a week. I realise that this might be outside your expectations, however it is a reasonable quote given the work involved, the condition of the scans and legibility of the handwriting, and the sensitivity and excellence you would expect of a transcriptionist/editor when preserving your family history. I truly believe that you get what you pay for, and I always provide excellent quality and service. I have also provided an hourly rate, as you should not need to pay more than is fair if I am able to complete the work faster than estimated.
