About the project

  1. Produce a (Puzzle Creator)tool for converting puzzles printed in a newspaper (as PDF files) for online use. It must be flexible enough to convert most puzzles into a user-friendly version that allows drag and drop or (more desirable) tap and pop use of numerical or word puzzles on any touch-screen device.
  2. Produce a reduced-function virtual keyboard (abc/123) as a widget - designed to make puzzle use easier
  3. Create a puzzle-based website focussed on a daily puzzle and the Puzzle Creator Tool (More information will be made available on confirmation of non-disclosure)

Hi, As others have said, each new "puzzle style" would require a redesign. I could build in a feature where you could do this yourself but it would increase the price a lot.

    Thanks, Boyd

Can you please provide some examples of the puzzles you specify in section 1?

    • Geoffst Client 10 Feb 2013 at 18:37

My puzzle is called BIYWord (see at Auspacmedia.com.au) but it should do anything from Crosswords to Sudoku to take them from PDF files as supplied to newspaper editors to online use

  • AlJ 10 Feb 2013 at 19:20

I saw a sample of your BIYWORD puzzle and assuming the layout is exactly the same for each puzzle it should be possible to create a script to automatically convert the PDF to an online representation. However given the nature of image recognition, a new algorithm would be required for each different type of puzzle. You'd need to specify exactly what types of puzzle PDFs you'd want to convert and supply examples for all of them. This a non-trivial task in image recognition but possible so long as examples are provided and the layout format of puzzles remains the same. But any format variations between newspaper publishers and layout will cause problems.

Also may I ask why you'd want to upload Sudoku puzzles? Given they are numeric puzzles they are easily generated by software algorithms, negating the need to manually upload them via PDF. Pretty much all number puzzles are the same. Here is an example of a Sudoku Generator: http://www.opensky.ca/~jdhildeb/software/sudokugen/

If your goal is to start a site for people to do puzzles online (and create/share existing puzzles) then we can discuss this but a generic tool to create puzzles from PDFs is a very difficult (if not impossible) proposition.

    Hello Geoffst,

Firstly, we need to know the different kind of puzzles that need to develop. For e.g Crossword, Sudoku, etc. Then we need to know how these pdf's were generated.

In section 2 basically deals with an input device for the tool

Section 3 basically informs that the tool would be hosted in a web server where the user can input the pdf and the pdf gets converted into a puzzle. Once it is converted into a puzzle, the user should be able to solve the puzzle on the web site.

Please answer the queries above and also confirm if my understanding is correct.
