We need an interactive map that displays data preferably using google maps api but could use alternate solutions like Datamaps (https://datamaps.github.io/ system).
The map will focus on Australia showing states and major town centres.
The data that is plotted on the map contains:

  • 1500 people;
  • each person has 3 street addresses points/customized icons (House School Hospital) connected via two lines between each point eg •-•-•;
  • each address will have a State and region code 1-5;
  • each person has a start scholarship year; and
  • each person has an age.

These will be supplied via excel or suitable file.

The display will need to be manipulated/filtered possibly using javascript with dropdowns/buttons or form toggles to highlight/display the data in the users chosen format see examples:

  • Show people who are from region2
  • Show people who are from region2 and in NSW
  • Show people who are from region2 and in NSW and year 2014
  • Show people's address1 in NSW and year 2014
  • Show people's address2
  • Show people who were 19 (this would display three addresses for each person)
  • Show people who were 19 address 2 (this would display one address for each person)

We would need to know if this is even possible with the suggested libraries or you can offer an alternative language/system.

We would require a fixed maximum cost estimate please contact us if you require any more detail to do that.

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for inviting me for the bid. I have gone through the description you have provided. I will start by summarizing my understanding for the project.

Summary of requirements:

  • Pictorial depiction of my understanding can be found at http://www.emergingbytes.com/GoogleMaps/poc.png
  • 1500*3 data points with long/lat are available and we need to visualize them on map with exploratory capabilities using drop down or selection menus
  • Your are looking for a web based solution to make it accessible online or on intranet

Summary of preferred technologies:

  • Google maps
  • HTML, Javascript, ajax

What we can offer:

  • Based on my understanding of the requirements, I believe this can be achieved using your preferred technologies
  • I can offer you complete solution design and development based on the provided requirements
  • After successful UAT, 1 month support is included for any bugs/issues
  • If you do not have a hosting but have a domain name, we can offer hosting for 1 year free of charge
  • If during the course of the project we realize the need for using database technology like mySQL, it will be done without any additional cost

Experience:

  • I have designed and developed Google API based Location Intelligence solutions for many clients. Some of the implemented use cases are provided as follows:
  • Service availability locator for a wireless ISP (tool covered all major cities of a country)
  • Customer experience tracking based on telecom cell sites (> 15000 POIs/cell sites)
  • Franchise proximity identification of an educational system

All of the above was achieved using Google Maps API as a base. We have also extensively used jquery into our implementations.

Time mentioned is factoring in requirement clarification and acceptance (UAT).

Please do let me know if you need any further details. I will be glad to facilitate.

Hi I am working at University of Melbourne in same kind of project. I have extensive experience working with Geo spatial data and map visualisation. I am familiar with both front-end and back-end by utilising technologies such as Javascript, Open layers, Java, Extjs , Postgis. So based on my experience I am confident and qualified for this project. Please contact me on my mobile 0449133679 for further discussion.

Hi Stephan,

I have experience of building interactive google maps for the client. Please find below the link to one of my project which is quite similar to what you want.

http://sporthallskartan.se/

I think what you want can be implemented by use of google maps.

My preferred technology stack is HTML5/CSS3/Laravel5/Mysql/Javascript

Hello Steven. I have many years (7+ years) of commercial software development experience relating to the google map API as well as the OpenLayers API. If you search for IWDDS and go to the Geological Survey of Ireland web site you can see an example of OpenLayers integrated with google maps. I expect your solution to be different to this but the technology used will be similar. I have also built an OpenLayers solution which includes an interactive query builder which is along the lines you require.
This is how I would go about delivering the solution to you:

  1. Scoping: Review the data file so I can see how to work out the geolocation of the data points.
  2. Design the layout of the map, query builder, visual controls, report area, data import/export functions (if required).
  3. Implement on my own local web server and then deploy on public facing site (Probably Google App Engine) for feedback.
  4. Deliver and help installing on hosting site of your choice.

Hi Stephen,

We have great experience with GIS dashboards particularly for the telecom industry. Different GIS vendors have different offerings. ArcGIS is the most full featured one which handles data and GIS into a single offering. You can have a look at a lot of examples here: http://www.esri.com/products/maps-we-love

As for free offerings the Google maps API is great, although you have to work setup and use your own database. Its more customisable than Data maps. You can look at the examples provided here https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/examples/ by clicking on them to see the depth of offering. If your use case agrees with Section 9 here and you dont want to go with ArcGIS then this is a great option: https://developers.google.com/maps/terms

Datamaps seems like an option for the most simplest of visualisations i.e. simple chloropeths. If the types of operations are only limited to the visualizations given in the example then its fine.

Also other examples you could look at are Tableau also, though its a paid offering, theres a whole lot it can do https://www.tableau.com/stories/topic/maps

If you want to discuss this further feel free to email me your number and lets have a quick call.

Could you make a sample data file available for review?

Stephen K.

Sorry Ray we have this tasked completed - the project is open only for administrative purposes closing it shortly - apologies.
